In this post I will share 15 conversation starters plus links to my favorite questions books so you have conversation starters for almost any occasion, plus lots of relationship questions to deepen your connection with your honey.
I got the idea for this week’s post from a coaching session I had last week where my client told me she was tired of asking her husband the same questions all the time. She wanted some conversation starters beyond just, “How are you?”, or “How was your day?”
I view communication whether in marriage or in any kind of relationship like a highway. You want as many lanes open as you can manage so you always have space to drive wherever you want to go.
I am a strong believer in the power of the daily check in– and asking a simple question like, “How was your day?” can be a great way to start a conversation to open up one of those “communication lanes” on your highway of connection.
However, just like a highway, what you want to create are many access points for communication. You want lots of entry points and exit points so you can zoom in and out of different types of communication.
The best way to keep the highway free and clear of any obstacles is to communicate regularly about non-threatening or non-stressful topics. That way when something more delicate comes up, you already have well-built roads that can support the extra weight of that heavy communication.
Boy, I went all in with the highway metaphors, huh? Let’s get to the conversation starters, shall we?

- What was a dream you had that you made come true?
- What place on your bucket list haven’t you been to yet? Why do you want to go there?
- What’s your favorite childhood memory?
- What are your top 3 favorite movies? Singers/Bands? TV Shows? Books?
- Who do you admire? Why?
- What are you passionate about? Why?
- What makes you angry?
- What is your favorite place? Why?
- Did you have any pets growing up? Why or why not? Do you have pets now?
- What are you working now that you want help with? How can I help?
Here are 5 Conversation Starters for couples:
- What did you love about being married today?
- If we won the lottery, what would you want to do with the money?
- What haven’t you had time for lately that you would love to do soon?
- What are you excited about right now?
- If you could change one thing about where we live, what would it be?
One of the things my hubby and I love to do are road trips. We live in Florida and can drive for maaaaany hours and still be in our beautiful state. Fortunately, there are some great places to visit here, so we typically go on several road trips a year. Our favorite thing to do on a road trip is ask each other questions.
Over the years we have developed a list of question books we turn to so we never run out of conversation starters.
